About Creighton University
Jesuit tradition, innovative spirit, and a vibrant future in health sciences.
Founded in 1878 through the philanthropic vision of Mary Lucretia Creighton, who stipulated its establishment in memory of her husband, Edward Creighton, Creighton University embodies a rich legacy of education and service. Initially known as Creighton College, it began with a modest cohort of 120 students, guided by dedicated Jesuits and lay teachers. The early growth and enduring strength of the university were significantly fostered by Edward's brother, John A. Creighton, whose sustained support was crucial to its foundational development and endowment.
The university quickly established its academic pillars, with the College of Arts and Sciences being founded in 1878—a division that proudly remains the largest college today. Demonstrating a commitment to intellectual curiosity and scientific advancement, the Creighton University Observatory was built on campus in 1885. A pivotal moment in its history occurred in 1913, when women were first admitted, marking a significant step toward inclusivity and broadening its educational reach.
In 1958, the institution formally split into Creighton Preparatory School and Creighton University, allowing both entities to further refine their distinct educational missions. The university continued to engage with broader societal and spiritual movements, commemorating the fiftieth anniversaries of the Second Vatican Council between 2012 and 2015. Looking towards the future, Creighton made a significant expansion in 2021 with the opening of its state-of-the-art Phoenix Health Sciences Campus, reinforcing its dedication to preparing students for impactful careers in vital health fields.
