Manhattan School of Music

Its journey began humbly between 1917 and 1918, when pianist and philanthropist Janet D. Schenck established the institution as the 'Neighborhood Music School' in East Harlem. From these early roots, guided by luminaries such as Pablo Casals and Harold Bauer, the school quickly grew in stature. This artistic and academic expansion led to a charter amendment in 1943, enabling MSM to grant the Bachelor of Music degree, followed by Master and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in subsequent decades, signifying its commitment to advanced musical education.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1969 with its strategic relocation to the culturally rich Morningside Heights neighborhood. This move, championed by previous leadership and realized under President George Schick, cemented its place within a vibrant academic and artistic community. It was here that a seminal opera program was created, further enriching its academic offerings. Today, under the leadership of President James Gandre, MSM continues its legacy of fostering world-class musicians, providing a dynamic student experience within one of the world's greatest cultural capitals.
