About Siena College

Siena College: A Franciscan legacy and vibrant future, soon to be Siena University.

Nestled in Loudonville, New York, Siena College stands as a distinguished private institution committed to "The Education for a Lifetime." From its humble beginnings to its exciting future, Siena offers a vibrant academic and student experience, rooted deeply in its Franciscan heritage and continually evolving to meet the demands of tomorrow's leaders.

Siena's rich history began in 1937, when the Order of Friars Minor, guided by the vision of Thomas Plassmann, established St. Bernardine of Siena College. Named after the revered 15th-century Italian Franciscan friar and preacher, Bernardino of Siena, the college quickly grew from a modest faculty of seven friars and one layperson. It secured its provisional charter in 1938 and a permanent charter in 1942, laying a solid foundation for decades of educational excellence.

Today, Siena is embracing a significant new chapter, enhancing both its academic programs and campus facilities. In a landmark move, the college opened a state-of-the-art $35 million science building in January 2025, complete with advanced laboratories and a dedicated nursing floor featuring cutting-edge simulation tools. Campus life has also seen notable improvements, including the opening of a charming Grotto and new bookstore in 2014, and a modern rugby pitch in 2016, enriching the student experience. Signifying its growth and expanded offerings, the institution is officially changing its name to Siena University in July 2025, marking a proud moment in its journey of providing comprehensive and impactful education.
